A mast might not be the most exciting component in a foil setup, but it’s arguably one of the most influential. While front wings tend to get all the attention, the mast determines how efficiently that wing can move through the water, and more importantly, how directly your inputs are transferred to the foil. If you’ve ever ridden a “bad” mast you will know what a detrimental effect it can have on your session.
The new Performance-X Carbon Mast sits at the very top of Armstrong’s range and represents several years of development. Built using a high-modulus carbon layup that incorporates High Modulus M55 carbon fibre, it’s designed to push efficiency as far as possible without sacrificing the predictable handling Armstrong riders have come to expect. Working with high-modulus M55 carbon is far from straightforward, both from a manufacturing perspective and sourcing the material, but the goal here wasn’t just to build another stiff mast. It was to reduce drag by producing a noticeably slimmer profile while maintaining the structural integrity needed for aggressive riding.
Compared with the previous Performance mast, Armstrong claims around a 10% increase in torsional and bending stiffness while reducing the chord thickness to improve hydrodynamic efficiency. It’s worth pointing out that this isn’t intended to replace the ultra-stiff Performance Mk II, which remains the choice for riders prioritising absolute rigidity. Instead, the Performance-X is aimed squarely at those looking for maximum glide, efficiency and reduced drag. Sizes: 725, 795, 865, 935mm
On The Water
The easiest way to expose the differences between foil components is to remove as many other variables as possible, and for me, dock starting remains one of the best tests available.
There’s no wing generating power and no wave providing extra energy. Everything comes down to how efficiently your foil setup carries speed.
The difference with the Performance-X was immediately noticeable.
The reduced drag compared to the previous generation performance mast genuinely makes the foil feel larger than it actually is. Every pump seems to carry a little further, every glide lasts slightly longer and maintaining flight simply requires less effort. It’s one of those upgrades that’s difficult to quantify until you’ve ridden it back-to-back with another mast, but once you do, it’s surprisingly obvious.
Much of that comes from the noticeably slimmer chord section and thinner profile. Riding high on the mast, where the chord is at its thinnest, you can really feel the reduction in drag. The foil accelerates and carries speed more efficiently and rewards smooth pumping with noticeably longer glides. The goal when you are dock starting is to stay high on the mast, and the rewards you feel are immense.
That same efficiency translates directly into all the other foiling disciplines; this mast feels faster. There’s less resistance, allowing the foil to maintain speed at all times. You’ll feel this immediately, no matter what you are doing on the foil; the performance increase is obvious.
Another pleasant surprise was the turning.
With less material moving through the water, the foil feels slightly more eager to carve. Direction changes happen with less resistance, and the whole setup feels just that little bit more alive beneath your feet. It’s not a dramatic transformation, but it adds to the overall impression of riding a more efficient system.
Perhaps the biggest compliment I can pay the Performance-X is that it makes every foil in your quiver feel better. The improved efficiency made my foils feel “bigger”; this made dock starting easier, but meant I could drop a foil size when it came to winging or prone. That's a huge benefit. This might be the biggest upgrade you could make to your current setup!
Overall
The Performance-X Carbon Mast is one of the most noticeable performance improvements you can make to your Armstrong foil collection.
Its reduced drag improves pumping efficiency, extends glide, makes foils feel more efficient and even adds a little extra freedom through the turns. None of those changes is revolutionary in isolation, but together they produce a setup that simply feels faster and more effortless across every discipline.
If you’re an Armstrong rider looking to extract the maximum performance from your existing foils, the Performance-X mast deserves serious consideration. It’s one of those rare upgrades that will make everything you already own work even better.
