The Starboard Ace Foil Lightning Foilboard is the narrower, more performance-focused member of the Ace downwind range. It is designed for rapid acceleration, early lift and efficient flight during SUP downwind, flat-water and surf foiling, while also supporting wing and parawing use. Its long, high-aspect proportions reduce drag and build speed quickly, making the range most relevant to riders comfortable balancing on a narrow board before take-off.
High-Aspect Downwind Shape
The outline evolves Starboard's teardrop concept into a straighter, more parallel plan shape. This keeps the waterline efficient and is intended to add usable stability along the board's length. The pin tail helps the board track while paddling, narrows the release area and limits contact when the rear of the board touches down. Round but boxy rails provide volume where it supports balance and give the board a spring-like response during paddle acceleration.
A flat deck allows the rider to use the full available width and provides a consistent standing surface. The rocker is tuned for speed and recovery across conditions ranging from flat water to ocean swell. Starboard says the profile develops speed quickly, lifts cleanly and remains forgiving when the board reconnects with the water. A dual-corduroy deck pad changes orientation through the centre, providing grip and a tactile reference for foot position.
Sizes and Rider Focus
Five principal dimensions cover a broad downwind rider range. The 8'10" x 19" board has 140 litres and is indicated for riders up to roughly 125 kg. The 8'4" x 19" version provides 122 litres for riders up to about 110 kg. A 101 litre board measures 8'2" x 18" and targets riders around 90 kg, while the 7'6" x 17" 87 litre model is aimed at riders around 80 kg. The narrowest option measures 7'5" x 15", carries 83 litres and is associated with riders up to approximately 75 kg. These values are Starboard's downwind SUP guidance.
Construction Choices
Most sizes use Carbon D2. This lightweight epoxy construction includes additional carbon through the standing area, a carbon load-frame rail band, carbon reinforcement around the foil box and a PVC Omega stringer ahead of the box. The objective is a stiff, responsive board with reduced mass for quicker acceleration and less effort once on foil.
The 101 litre model is also listed in ZERO construction. ZERO is a full-carbon hollow structure that connects the deck and bottom with internal PVC stringers. Starboard emphasises the reduced swing weight of this option, which is intended to make the long board feel more compact through turns and reduce the mass a rider must control in flight. The construction is also designed to improve acceleration and early lift while maintaining the stiffness required by the narrow shape.
Practical Details
Starboard supplies a stretchable board sock intended to protect against dust, scratches and ultraviolet exposure. Across the range, the combination of the flat stance, narrow parallel outline and pin-tail release places efficiency ahead of beginner-level stability. The wider 140 and 122 litre models retain more volume, while the 83 and 87 litre sizes are explicitly performance-led.
Summary
The Ace Foil Lightning is intended for committed downwind and flat-water SUP foilers seeking maximum acceleration and glide from a very narrow board. Its parallel high-aspect outline, pin tail, tuned rocker, tactile deck pad and lightweight Carbon D2 or ZERO constructions provide its main supported performance features.
