Engineering Confidence
Designing a truly great all-round wing is arguably one of the hardest challenges in wing foiling.
A dedicated race wing can be optimised for speed and efficiency. A freestyle wing can focus on explosive power and rigidity, while a wave wing can prioritise drift and neutral handling above almost everything else. An all-round wing, however, has no such luxury. It has to do everything well. It needs enough low-end power to get riders onto the foil early, enough top-end control to remain comfortable as the wind builds, predictable handling through transitions, stable drift on a wave, and the versatility to adapt to whatever the session becomes.
Finding that balance is no easy task.
Rather than chasing outright performance in one particular discipline, Ozone has approached the Flow V2 from a different perspective. The objective wasn’t simply to make the wing faster or stiffer than its predecessor, but to make it more intuitive. Every refinement has been made with the same goal in mind: helping riders feel more connected, more comfortable and ultimately more confident every time they step onto the water.
It’s a philosophy that runs throughout the entire design.
Confidence Begins With Connection
The most significant update to the Flow V2 is immediately obvious. Ozone has introduced an all-new carbon boom system, fundamentally changing the way the rider connects with the wing.
Carbon booms have become increasingly common over the past few seasons, but Ozone’s approach goes beyond simply replacing individual handles. The boom is integrated through a stitched connection designed to eliminate the small amount of movement that naturally exists in modular handle systems.
While those movements may only be measured in millimetres, they can subtly influence the way rider inputs are transferred into the canopy. By creating a more direct connection, the Flow V2 is designed to respond more immediately to steering inputs while delivering a more precise feel throughout the session.
The boom itself has received just as much attention. A textured EVA grip provides comfort and security in all conditions, while integrated protective bumpers help shield the board during manoeuvres. Ozone has also used higher-grade carbon in the longer boom sizes to maintain consistent stiffness throughout the range, ensuring larger wings retain the same direct feel as their smaller counterparts.
It’s a thoughtful piece of engineering that reflects the overall direction of the wing. Rather than making dramatic changes to the way riders fly, it simply removes unnecessary movement between the rider and the canopy.
Building A Wider Comfort Zone
If the boom improves the connection, the canopy has been developed to improve confidence.
The aerodynamic profile has been refined to produce positive lift throughout manoeuvres while improving efficiency at both ends of the wind range. Easier pumping in lighter conditions helps riders accelerate onto the foil with less effort, while improved comfort as the wind increases allows the wing to remain composed over a broader operating range.
Equally important is the way Ozone has approached sail tension.
Rather than creating a uniformly tight canopy, the Flow V2 combines a tightly tensioned leading section with a softer trailing edge. The tighter front section helps maintain the wing’s shape under load, while the more compliant trailing edge allows it to absorb gusts more progressively instead of transmitting every change in wind directly to the rider.
The result is a wing that feels settled rather than nervous, particularly during longer sessions where rider fatigue often becomes as important as outright performance.
Combined with the revised aerodynamic profile, the positive lift characteristics help support the wing as it passes overhead during tacks and gybes, reducing the tendency to front stall and allowing riders to concentrate on their footwork rather than constantly managing the wing.
Engineering The Canopy
Material choice has become one of the biggest talking points in wing design, but selecting the right cloth is only part of the story. Understanding where different materials should be used is equally important.
For the Flow V2, Ozone has opted for a hybrid canopy construction using Teijin 5x5 and 3x3 ripstop materials.
The more durable 5x5 cloth forms the majority of the canopy, helping the wing maintain its designed shape over time while providing excellent long-term durability. Meanwhile, strategically positioned 3x3 panels are used in areas where more controlled flex benefits the overall behaviour of the wing.
It’s a subtle approach that reflects a broader engineering philosophy. Rather than relying on a single material to perform every task, Ozone has selected each fabric according to the loads and characteristics required in different parts of the canopy.
The objective isn’t simply to build a lighter or stronger wing. It’s to maintain the handling characteristics that riders experience on day one throughout the life of the product.
Small Details, Big Difference
One of the characteristics that separates mature products from first-generation designs is attention to detail.
The Flow V2 includes a series of refinements that may appear minor individually but collectively contribute to a calmer, more composed ride.
Reinforced anti-flap battens help reduce canopy flutter when the wing is flagged out, improving stability while reducing unnecessary noise. A redesigned leading-edge handle makes the wing more comfortable to control during wave riding, while repositioned windows improve visibility without compromising the canopy layout.
Ozone has also introduced size-specific tip tuning across the range.
Rather than simply enlarging or shrinking the same design, the smaller wings feature thinner tips to help release excess pressure in stronger winds, while the larger sizes incorporate thicker tips that improve stability and maintain consistent handling characteristics.
It’s a level of detail that often goes unnoticed until riders switch between different sizes. Creating a family of wings that all share the same familiar feel is considerably more challenging than designing a single standout size, yet it’s one of the hallmarks of a well-developed range.
Designed For Real Sessions
Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the Flow V2 isn’t any individual feature, but the way every refinement supports the same objective.
Nothing feels like technology added for the sake of marketing.
The carbon boom improves rider connection. The revised profile broadens the usable wind range. The sail tension balances stability with comfort. Material placement is used to control flex rather than simply reduce weight, while numerous small refinements quietly improve the overall riding experience without demanding attention.
That’s exactly how an all-round wing should be engineered.
Whether the session involves cruising, learning new manoeuvres, riding waves or simply making the most of changing conditions, the Flow V2 has been developed to adapt naturally as the rider’s focus shifts throughout the day.
The Bigger Picture
As wing foiling continues to evolve, equipment is becoming increasingly specialised. Dedicated race, freestyle and wave wings continue to push the boundaries of performance within their own disciplines, but the reality is that most riders spend far more time enjoying varied sessions than chasing a single objective.
That makes products like the Flow V2 more relevant than ever.
Rather than pursuing maximum performance in one specific area, Ozone has concentrated on something that arguably matters more to the majority of riders: confidence.
Confidence to pump onto the foil in marginal winds. Confidence to remain comfortable as the breeze builds. Confidence to throw the wing overhead during a tack or flag it out on a wave without constantly thinking about what the canopy is doing.
Those aren’t headline-grabbing specifications, but they are the characteristics that define how a wing feels over months and years of ownership.
The Flow V2 isn’t about reinventing the all-round wing. It’s about refining it. Through a series of carefully considered engineering decisions, Ozone has created a wing that feels balanced, intuitive and reassuringly predictable, qualities that often make the biggest difference every time you head for the water.
