Make sure you start right, paddle length is everything!

How tall should your paddle be for stand up paddle boarding?

In this SUP training tip, Michael Booth explains how to choose the right paddle length depending on your race distance and technique.

For distance paddling, a good starting point is 104–105% of your height (around 4–5% taller than you).
For shorter races (5–6 km), you may go slightly shorter.
For ultra-distance paddling, some riders prefer up to 10% taller.
For sprinting, your paddle can be as short as eye level or your exact height — depending on your technique, flexibility, hip rotation, and stroke style.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. Your paddle length depends on:
• Race distance
• Technique and body movement
• Flexibility and rotation
• Personal preference

Test different lengths and see what feels fastest and most efficient for you.
