Big blade or small blade — what’s better?
In this SUP tip, Michael Booth explains how paddle blade size affects your power, cadence, and overall efficiency.
From his experience:
✔ Bigger blade = more power at the catch
✔ Smaller blade = higher cadence, less load
✔ XL blades work well for strong, front-end paddlers
✔ L blades are more common for distance paddling
✔ Sprinting: bigger blade can give more acceleration
Blade shape also matters:
• Rounded edges = smoother release
• More scoop (concave) = better control
• Flatter blades = easier to lose grip in the water
There’s no perfect size. It depends on your technique, strength, and stroke rate.
Find what feels fast, efficient, and sustainable for you.
